Support for Humanitarianism through Intercontinental Projects (SHIP)

Every year SHIP, or Support for Humanitarianism through Intercontinental Projects, puts on a fundraiser called Pre-Med Day. This day is designed to give students an opportunity to get a preview of what it is like to be a medical student here at LSU Shreveport School of Medicine and the opportunities we have at this medical school.

Students will tour the medical school and new state of the art building, participate in intubation and suturing workshops, experience our gross anatomy cadaver lab, and meet and interact with some current medical students. This allows students to get excited about medical school as well as ask questions regarding how to best prepare themselves for the application process. Students will learn more about SHIP itself and the opportunities SHIP provides to medical students at LSU Health Shreveport.

Specifically, SHIP organizes clinical rotations for 3rd and 4th year medical students to travel to Kenya or Honduras to practice medicine. Medical students on these trips have the opportunity to participate in one-on-one medical care of patients in medically underserved areas. Students who participate in Pre-Med Day get to hear more about these trips as well as help contribute to them as this event is a fundraiser specifically meant to help send students to Kenya and Honduras.

Pre-Med Day for college students is on Saturday, March 9th and for high school students is on Sunday March 10th and attendance is $100, which includes lunch. Students can register for Pre-Med Day by filling out the following form, https://forms.lsuhs.edu/Forms/gh3n. A flyer for the event is attached at the end of this email and if anyone has any questions, they can email me at hdt001@lsuhs.edu. You are welcome to print the flyers to hang around your school.

Thank you,
